First Generation of Computer – 1940 to 1956

Vacuum tubes were quite large in size, as a result, computers at that time were also quite large in size. These computers were so big that they used to look like an entire room.

Running these computers was quite expensive. They used a lot of electricity, after which they were very hot, which often caused malfunction.

UNIVAC, ENIAC, ADSAC, IBM 701 were the vacuum vacuum computers of the time, in which thousands of vacuum tubes were installed.

Second Generation 1956 to 1963 | Second Generation of Computer

Transistors began to be used in Second Generation computers. Transistors were used in place of vacuum tubes in these computers.

Transiter was smaller in size than vacuum tubes, so computers of this generation also started becoming smaller in size than before.

These computers also became faster in speed than before. Also, they became much better than the first generation computers with energy savings, low construction cost and reliability.

Apart from this, the computer of this generation replaced Symbolic, assembly language instead of Cryptic binary machine language. In which programmers could describe Instructions in Words.

In this generation, high level programming languages ​​like COBOL and FORTRAN also developed.

Third Generation 1964 to 1971 | Third Generation of Computer

From 1964 to 1971 the third generation of computers was active. At this time the use of Integrated Circuit (IC) started in computers. With the use of IC, the computers of this generation became smaller in size than other generation computers. The use of IC made computers faster than before.

These computers started becoming cheaper by the second generation. Also, they had more storage capacity than before. It also started using Mouse and Keyboard instead of Punch Cards for Input. Even today, IC is used in computers.

The computers of the time were PDP-8, PDP-11, IBM 360 – 370 etc. Third Generation computers.

Fourth Generation 1971 to 1980 | Fourth Generation of Computer

The fourth generation computer saw a big change. In this generation, the microprocessor was invented, which was used inside the computer. It is also known as CPU.

The use of Microprocessor with Integrated Circuit made computers much lighter and used as desktops. Laptops were also introduced after this change. The computers of this generation became less hot and they became faster than before. Microprocessors are still used in computers today. IBM 4341, PUP 11 etc. are the computers of this generation.

Fifth Generation 1980 to Present and Future | Fifth Generation of Computer

The fifth generation of computers is considered since 1980, which is currently running. Many new technologies started coming in Fifth Generation. The use of artificial intelligence has changed significantly.

Many programs based on AI such as Voice Recognition have started coming in, although it is still under development.Very fast and powerful Microprocessor Chips are being manufactured in this generation. Today, computers can do much more reliable and faster work.
